Economic Stimulus Package....Coupons?

I don't mind sharing my idea of an economic stimulus package...coupons! It is nothing new, not innovative, not some big bright idea. It has been around for awhile...coupons. Want to stimulate the economy? Give me some coupons (and a rebate check!). I mean real meaningful coupons - for brand name stuff.

I know that there are folks who are loyal coupon clippers and they know about the benefits already. But I am hoping to reach the masses, my friends, family and the like...in these economic times, coupons come in handy.

For example, I used to throw away those big blue and white Bed Bath & Beyond coupon. Not anymore honey....not when I learned I can buy more than bath towels at this spot and get 20% off a single item. And you know what is the great thing about BB&B? They take as many coupons that you have, including the expired ones. You have 20 items and you have 20 coupons (this is possible..I saw a lady with a handful of them)...you get 20% off each item. And what is even greater about my peoples at BB&B..they even take the competitors coupons!!!!

Now, the catch is you can't combine them with the $5 off coupon. But you know what, I am fine with that because I learned how to be strategic with the coupons. You should see me and my mom at the register...I am happy when it is time to present my coupons!!!

If they would just add a freezer section!!! (LOL)

Do what I do...collect the coupons from friends and family that do not use their coupons (foolish...). You can buy a shower head, a comforter set, rugs and toothpaste, lotion, etc.

First Breeze of Summer...

Hey good people...

Remember I told you way back in the day about Crystal and Brandon? The up and coming actors? Well I am going to update you about them and someone else in the group, Jason Dirden. Yes, they are family. Brief background for those just catching up...Crystal is married to Brandon and Jason is his brother which makes him Crystal's bro-in-law. Got it? Oh yeah, most importantly, all three are in the cast of the highly anticipated play, "The First Breeze of Summer".

"The First Breeze of Summer" is the first production of the Signature Theatre's 2008-2009 season celebrating the historic Negro Ensemble Company (NEC). "The First Breeze of Summer" by Leslie Lee and directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, begins previews on August 5, 2008 and continues through September 28 at the Peter Norton Space located at 555 West 42nd Street in New York City.

You should check it out....the tickets are only $20 (special initiative sponsored by Time Warner)

The original production of "The First Breeze of Summer", directed by NEC founder Douglas Turner Ward, received a Tony Award nomination for Best Play during its 1975 run at Broadway's Palace Theatre. The show takes place over the course of one sweltering weekend in June, as the struggles of three generations of the Edwards family collide. Gremmar (Leslie Uggams), the family matriarch, looks back on her past and considers its legacy for her children and grandchildren as they confront the choices that will define their futures. Leslie Lee's Obie Award-winning play is a timeless portrait of family bonds and coming of age.

Singing Vernon...Reggae Crusade...

Hey good people,

In the weeks that I was out and about --MIA from the cyberspace-- I took a short trip to Jamaica that was relaxing, but most importantly, enlightening. I had the opportunity to meet an reggae artist that is on a mission to add a different vibe in the music space. A vibe that makes you want to stand up for your rights, be proud of your heritage and fall in love...all at the same time.

His name? Singing Vernon. I had the pleasure of spending time with the Singer. I want to share him with you. Check out his site: Singing Vernon on myspace. My favorite songs..."Love Is the Reason" and "Simple Life". I am sure you will find your favorite song too!

Hair Care...Inexpensive...Works Wonders

Greetings good people,

I know, I know, I have been absent. Don't be mad - I was out and about learning new things to share with you!!!

While I was out, I stumbled across a hair care product that has been working wonders on my hair. (In addition to the marinating oil..). It is a deep conditioner that cost $1.29 per pack! I used it every Saturday as part of my my hair care process. It is the "Olive Oil Replenishing Pack".

It has been working wonders. I marinate my hair for twenty minutes before going to the doobie shop then after my shampoo the stylist puts the deep conditioner in and I sit under the dryer for 15 minutes. That is it. Wash, Deep Condition, Set and Go!!!

Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Hey good people...

Thursday nights are the best for me. No, no, not just because it one more day closer to the weekend. It is the day I can challenge my mind by watch Fox's show, "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"

I will admit, sometimes I get stumped. But what I love most is the fact that I am thinking again and I find myself trying to stay on top of my game in case I run into a 5th grader. I will share with you that I have been sharpening my memory skills by playing word games on the American Mensa website.

Plan on running into a 5th grader soon? Prepare for combat at home (or for just plain ole' fun) with this book based on the show.

2008...Still Singing Off Key!

Hey good people...


Wow, 2008! Are you excited? I am. I am looking forward to a better me...and a better you. I was not really big on making 'resolutions'. Well, actually, I made them but I was not serious about it.


Where I was yesterday...

Something hit me two years ago. On the eve of 2006, I remember being in my apartment in New Jersey...by myself. No, don't say 'ahhhh', I had a party to go to, but I wanted to ring in the new year with a plan that I knew that I would stick to. So to do this, I needed to be alone when the time changed. I was going to take this resolution thing serious this time. So I needed to be by myself to reflect on what I wanted, personally and professionally. I needed to hear my own voice. No one around to influence my thoughts. I thought about what made me happy, what drove me to the highest level of pisstosity (yes...that mad!) and those things that were neutral.

What I learned about myself was that I lost focus. I lost focus because I lost my voice. I could not hear me...I heard everyone else's thoughts about life. Actually my voice was not lost, I was just quiet. For awhile, I said nothing about anything. Life was happening around me and I was a passive participant.

Well I decided that the time for passivity was up and I was going to roar like the Leo that I am. I was going to participate and make it known. I got some paper from the printer and used my favorite pen and jotted down my plan...my personal note to God. I asked for prepartion, guidance and protection as I embarked on this new journey. I had a lot on my heart...remember I was quiet for a minute, so I had a lot to say! But tell you what, it was not a long note, but it covered so much. I put in my bible, using it as a bookmark to read Psalms 23.

I felt so content knowing that I finally decided to open my mouth. I got dressed, went to the party and had a good time.


Where I am today...

2007 came and it is going in the next 24 hours. While I will not mention my personal conversation, I will tell you, MY VOICE is LOUD. This time last year, I was packing the last box from my apartment in New Jersey and moving into my new home in Mount Vernon, New York. I came home, dropped the last box in my empty living room. The new year found me by myself, again, this time in a big house. Yes, I had several places to go to, but you know what...yep, you guessed it...I had a party in my house, with a one woman band. Ain't nothing like focusing and hearing your own voice, and loving it, even though it was a little of key!

I love my kitchen!

Thought I would share that my friend Crystal (a.k.a. C-Boogie) is directing a play the renowned playwright, Pearl Cleage, "A Song for Coretta".



About the play: Five women, at the end of the line to see Coretta Scott King lay in state, find laughter and hope in this moving and unexpectedly funny new play.

PERFORMANCE DATES: 01/17/2008 -02/17/2008



Crystal Dickinson lived in Atlanta for five years and since then has performed at 7 Stages, Georgia Shakespeare, Synchronicity and Theatre-in-the-Square, served as an alumni volunteer for Miss Porter’s School, a panelist for DeKalb County, Office of Arts, Culture & Entertainment and an auditor for the Governor’s Honor’s Program. She is a proud MFA graduate of The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and a New Jersey Native. She also studied at the London Academy for Music and Dramatic Art. Currently, Crystal serves as an Assistant Professor of Drama at Spelman College where she teaches Acting and African American Theatre History.
